GABRIEL MACIEL WINS PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARD
Outfielder Gabriel Maciel has evolved from an everyday steady hand in Sussex County to a true star of the Frontier League. In seven games this past week, he piled up 16 hits in 29 at-bats, including three doubles, a triple, and three home runs; he also stole four bases. He led the Miners on a three-game winning streak while bumping his season batting average over the .400 mark. Maciel went a perfect 5-for-5 in the Friday opener against the New Jersey Jackals, including a double, two RBIs, and two stolen bases. His splits for the week ended as .571 AVG/.613 OBP/1.071 SLG.
Maciel, a former member of the Minnesota Twins and Arizona Diamondbacks minor league systems, burst onto the scene this past offseason representing Team Brazil in the World Baseball Classic Qualifiers. He led his home country to a 3-1 record and played highlight-level defense in center field. In his second season in the Frontier League, Maciel is playing some of his best baseball. His five home runs are the most in his career, and he is on pace to set career-bests in several offensive categories. He is the first Miner to win a weekly award since Griffin Baker in early June 2023.
