2018 Frontier League Home Run Derby Winner Trae Santos

O’FALLON, MO. –  On a hot and humid evening in O’Fallon, Missouri, Trae Santos of the Gateway Grizzlies outslugged former St. Louis Cardinal Rick Ankiel in the 2018 Frontier League Home Run Derby final round to be crowned winner. Santos totaled 32 home runs over four rounds at CarShield Field, home of the River City Rascals.

Four former Cardinals participated in the Derby. They included Mark Whiten, Ray Lankford, Kerry Robinson and Ankiel. In a three-way tiebreaker, Robinson out-homered both Whiten and Lankford to move on to round two, but fell short of reaching the final following Ankiel’s two home runs in the semifinal round.

After the 11-year major league veteran mashed three long balls in the final, Santos erupted for four total home runs – three coming on consecutive swings.

“I just tried to keep it simple and not try to put too much effort into swings and conserve a good amount of energy,” Santos said. “The fans supplying the atmosphere that they did made it a lot of fun.”

It was a rare event in which Frontier Leaguers competed against former Major Leaguers in a battle of power. For Santos, the experience was one for the books.

“It was awesome,” the home run champ said of the event. “I grew up watching those guys and to be able to participate in something like this alongside them was a real honor and I had a lot of fun.”

Home Run Derbies are kind to Gateway representatives when hosted by the division rival Rascals. Former Grizzlie and current manager Phil Warren won the last Derby that took place in River City back in 2004.
