JOLIET, IL — Behind the arm of starting pitcher Scot Hoffman, the Joliet Slammers earned their second home win of 2019 in a matchup with the Gateway Grizzlies Tuesday night, moving to 3-2 overall on the season.
Following 3½ scoreless innings, right fielder Ridge Hoopii-Haslam put the Slammers in the run column, driving in two on a double off the center field wall. The Slammers would end the inning taking a 2-0 lead into the 5th.
The Grizzlies shut down the Slammers’ offense for the rest of the night, but Hoffman pitched four more scoreless innings of his own, allowing the Slammers to maintain their 2-0 lead into the 9th.
Hoffman was relieved by right-hander Ryan Koziol to start the 9th inning, and the Grizzlies responded with a double down the first base line. Koziol denied the Grizzlies’ comeback attempts however, securing his second save of the season with two groundouts to end the game 2-0 in favor of the home team.
Tonight’s Merchants and Manufacturer’s Bank Player of the Game is Scot Hoffman (8.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, and 2 SO).
The Slammers square off with the Grizzlies again at home tomorrow in the second of a three-game series.
