Traverse City Enters Break With a Win Over Gateway

TRAVERSE CITY, MI- The Traverse City Beach Bums(24-26) took a five run lead into the final inning and hung on for the victory over the Gateway Grizzlies(22-31), by a final score of 8-7. With the win, the Bums won two of three over Gateway, and four of six during the home stand.


Gateway got on the board in the first inning, picking up an RBI infield single from Shane Mardirosian and a sacrifice fly by Blake Brown. They added a third run in the third on a Paul Russo RBI single. In the bottom of the inning, last night’s hero, Alexis Rivera, led off with a single. Two batters later, he moved to second on a Max Dutto walk then scored on Alec Olund’s RBI single to center, for a 3-1 game.


The Beach Bums, in the fifth, sent 11 men to the plate as they scored seven runs to take the lead. Isaac Benard led off with a single to right followed by a Luke Lowery single and Noah McGowan getting hit by a pitch. With a couple of strikeouts sprinkled in-between, the bases were load with two away. Max Dutto and Kendall Patrick each picked up walks to tie the game at three. Alec Olund followed with a two-run single then, after a Connor Oliver walk re-loaded the bases, Benard cleared them with a triple, for an 8-3 Bums lead.


In the ninth, Gateway chipped away at their deficit picking up a sacrifice fly by Jeff Cardenas, RBI singles by Brent Sakurai and Jhonniel Alvarez, and an RBI double by Russo, pulling the Grizzlies within one. With the tying run at third, and the lead run at second, Matt Williams was able to strike out John Price Jr. To clinch the win for Traverse City.


Jordan Desguin picked up the win for the Bums, going seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits, all in the first two innings. He finished by retiring the last 16 Grizzlies he faced, striking out four overall, as he improves his record to 6-2. Alec Kisena is dealt the loss to drop to 4-3. He went four and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs on seven hits and four walks, while fanning eight. Matt Williams earned his sixth save of the season.


The Beach Bums now head into the 2018 All-Star break with five heading to O’Fallon, MO for the mid-summer classic. Will Kengor, Steve Lohr, John Michael Knighton, and Jordan Desguin will play for the “Experienced” team while Isaac Benard will start for the “Rookie” team.
