SAUGET, Ill. – The Frontier League would like to congratulate former Frontier League manager and player Fran Riordan for leading the Midland RockHounds (Double-A, Oakland) to the Texas League Championship.
Fran served as the skipper for Dubois County, Richmond, Kalamazoo and Florence over 13 years. Riordan has three Frontier League Championships under his belt. His first and second championships came with Richmond when the Roosters went back to back in 2001 and 2002 where he provided his services as a player manager. His third title came with Kalamazoo in 2005. Fran was the manager for Oakland’s Single-A affiliate Beloit, before joining the RockHounds in 2016.
The RockHounds faced the Tulsa Drillers in a best of 5 game series last week. The Rockhounds found themselves down early in the series when the Drillers took the lead after winning games 1 and 2, 5-3 and 5-4. Fran led his team to the championship after winning three straight games 2-0, 6-3 and 1-0.
Fran’s legendary career landed him a spot in the Frontier League Hall of Fame in 2014. Fran currently sits top of the all-time wins list with a record of 625-537 in his 13 year career. With Schaumburg’s League Championship win on Saturday, Jamie Bennett ties Fran for second most titles in League history with 3.
The Frontier League is in its 25th season in 2017 and includes 12 teams stretching from Pennsylvania to Missouri and from Kentucky to Northern Michigan. The Frontier League annually advances the most players to MLB organizations of any of the independent leagues, and 32 former Frontier League players have played in the Major Leagues.
