Freedom to Play as Covington Blue Sox Thursday

FLORENCE, Ky. —  The first-place Florence Freedom, presented by Titan Mechanical Solutions, will pay tribute Thursday night to the Covington Blue Sox, Northern Kentucky’s first professional baseball team, by taking the field in vintage Blue Sox uniforms.

Before the 7:05 p.m. game at UC Health Stadium, the Covington Fire Department will face the Covington Police Department in a “Guns vs Hoses” softball game.

Covington mayor Joseph Meyer will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before with a special golden baseball, in the same way that mayor George “Pat” Phillips did in 1913, before the Freedom face the Evansville Otters.

As Freedom players are announced onto the field, they will be joined by one of the local Covington youth baseball teams.

The event is presented by Smoke Justis in Covington, named after one of the players from the 1913 Blue Sox team. Gates will open at 5:05 p.m., with the softball game scheduled to run from 5:35 p.m. to 6:35 p.m.

In addition to the Covington-themed festivities, Thirsty Thursday drink specials will be offered, including $4 20-ounce craft beers, $2 16-ounce Hudepohl cans and $1 12-ounce Hudy Delight cans.
