SAUGET, Ill. – Rascal Dan Ludwig and Crusher Sean Hurley have been named Week 11 Frontier League Pitcher and Player of the Week as chosen by Pointstreak, the official statistical provider of the Frontier League and the Independent Professional Baseball Federation.
Dan Ludwig found his groove when the River City Rascals hosted the Traverse City Beach Bums on July 21. Ludwig shut down the Traverse City offense when he pitched a complete game-shutout and totaled ten strikeouts. He surrendered just eight hits and walked one. Dan recorded two strikeouts in each of the first, second and fourth innings. To add to his impressive feat, he struck-out All-Stars and former Players of the Week, Will Kengor and Steven Patterson with two strikeouts apiece. The 13-0 game was his lone start on the week.
Ludwig is in his third season in the Frontier League, second with the Rascals. The Naperville native has moved to a 5-1 record in twelve starts and currently has a 3.12 ERA (7th overall). The nine inning outing was Ludwig’s first game since May 19 where he has went seven innings or more.
Ludwig came to the Frontier League in 2016 to the Miners after spending the 2015 season in the American Association with the Gary SouthShore RailCats. The lefty made the move to the Rascals in 2016 where he also had a start and got the win against his former team (Southern Illinois).
Lake Erie Crusher outfielder Sean Hurley earns his first Player of the Week honors behind the Crushers 3-3 record on the week. Hurley’s biggest game of the week came on July 22, when the Crushers dominated the Florence Freedom 23-6. In the game, Hurley went 3 for 5 including two homeruns, a double, five RBI and three runs scored. Hurley batted .520 on the week after going 13 for 25. The Sarasota native racked up six runs, four doubles, three homers, ten RBI and two walks.
Sean is in his second season with the Crushers after spending some of 2016 in the Can-Am League. He has played in fifty-eight of the fifty-nine games this season. His hot-hitting week has brought his batting average on the season up to .303. He has a twelve home runs, forty-two RBI, forty-three runs scored, eighteen doubles and forty walks. His career batting average now comes to .256.
The Rascals (32-29, 3rd in West) will travel to Lake Erie (26-33) and Traverse City (24-35) after hosting the Crushers and Beach Bums (won series 3-0) in O’Fallon last week. The Crushers won the series against the Rascals 2-1. The Crushers lost their series against the Freedom 1-2. The Crushers will host the Normal CornBelters (29-31) next weekend.
The Frontier League is entering its 25th season in 2017 and includes 12 teams stretching from Pennsylvania to Missouri and from Kentucky to Northern Michigan. The Frontier League annually advances the most players to MLB organizations of any of the independent leagues, and 32 former Frontier League players have played in the Major Leagues.
