TRAVERSE CITY, MI – The Traverse City Beach Bums(23-29) took a two run lead into the ninth and squeaked out a victory over the Schaumburg Boomers(35-17), by a final score of 7-6.
Jeff DeBlieux led off the first with a double to right field. After moving to third on a fly ball, Will Kengor grounded to the right side of the infield to drive him home and give the Beach Bums an early 1-0 lead. They added more offense in the third, when Kengor led off with a double. Alexis Rivera and Nick Murphy, each reached base on infield hits with Kengor scoring to double the lead. With two away, Zach Files hit a two run single to make it 4-0.
In the top of the fourth, two RBI ground outs, by Seth Spivey and David Harris, cut the Boomer deficit in half. After a scoreless fifth, Schaumburg grabbed the lead in the sixth. Spivey hit an RBI double and Ryan O’Malley grounded in a run, but during that grounder, the throw to first got away, and Harris scored on the error to bring the score to 5-4. The Beach Bums took little time to tie the game, as Josh Hauser walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, the scored on a Steven Patterson RBI single in the bottom of the inning.
With one out in the eighth, Files walked and moved to third on a well-executed hit-and-run by Hauser, putting runners on the corners. DeBlieux stepped up to the plate and laid down a perfect bunt as Files took off for the plate, giving Traverse City the lead on the suicide squeeze. Patterson followed with another RBI single to provide an important insurance run. In the ninth, with the bases loaded, Jack Parenty scored on a passed ball but that’s as close as Schaumburg would come.
Matt Williams earned his first professional win with a solid two inning relief performance. He allowed just one hit while fanning two. Kit Fowler is dealt the loss to drop to 0-1. Enrique Oquendo allowed th single run in the ninth but struck out the side, the final two with the bases loaded to preserve his fourth save of the season.
Tomorrow evening, the Beach Bums and Boomer decide this weekend’s series with a 5:05 start. John Havird gets the call for the Bums while Brandon Quintaro goes for Schaumburg. The voice of the Beach Bums, Tom Willms, goes on the air at 4:45pm with the Budweiser pre-game show, on 101.9- The Bay.
