JOLIET, Ill. – With the 2017 Frontier League All-Star Week now underway, the Frontier League announces the 2017 Home Run Derby participants, presented by MK Orthopedics.

West Preview: Otter representative Josh Gardner, currently leads the Frontier League with 13 homeruns. The next closest hitter in the West to Gardner is Gateway Grizzlie Blake Brown at 10. Brown has two multi-homer games so far this season. Dane Phillips earned Player of the Week honors earlier this season when he hit three bombs over the course of the week. Aaron Dudley finished second last season in total homeruns in the entire League with eighteen. With a lower number of shots taken, Dudley is currently fourth in the League in slugging percentage with .573. Despite a slower start to the season, Josh Silver (River City) finished third overall in batting average for the Frontier League in 2016 at .352. Though Brower only having five homers is highlighted by his .451 slugging percentage.
East Preview: Steven Patterson and Seth Spivey both hold the highest total homeruns out of the East Division representatives. Spivey has been awarded Player of the Week three times this season and currently holds the highest batting average in the Frontier League at .423 and slugging percentage at .709. Patterson also earned Week 3 Player of the Week thanks to his bombs. Rock Shoulders who leads the Slammers with eight dingers, started out the season by having a multi-homer game against Traverse City back on May 18. Larry Balkwill looks to step in and be a leader in the Derby as he will start at catcher for the East All-Stars. With seven homers, his more impressive feat is a .500 slugging percentage. Tanner Lubach will take the duties for Lake Erie as he will try to crush some dingers at Slammers Stadium.
City of Joliet Participation: In an effort in getting the City of Joliet more involved with the festivities. The Slammers are adding two special guests to the home run derby. Representing the Joliet Fire Department will be Sean Miller. Representing the Joliet Police Department will be Bill Busse.
Home Run Derby Rules:
Format: 12 players compete in three rounds. Top six hitters with the most home runs advance to second round. Top three hitters with the most home runs advance to third round. Hitter with the most home runs in the third round will be 2017 Frontier League Home Run Derby Champion.
Timing: Two minutes per round.
Advancement/Scoring: Ties in any round broken by a 60 second swing-off; if a tie remains after swing-off, batters will engage in successive three-swing swing-offs until there is a winner. Each batter is entitled to a 20 second time out in the second and third round.
During the Home Run Derby the “Illinois Hops on 66” Beer Fest will be open from 6-9 p.m.
Joliet is offering a special ticket package for the event. For $50.00, fans get a ticket to the Home Run Derby and 20 pours at the beer fest. The first 300 fans at beer fest will receive a free piece of glassware from Goose Island Brewery. Fans will also be able to win various prizes throughout the contest.
There will be musical entertainment provided by The Big Lagniappe, a local Joliet, New Orleans roots influenced band.
The 2017 Home Run Derby will take place on Tuesday, July 11 at Slammers Stadium in downtown Joliet, Illinois at 7:05 p.m.
The 2017 All Star Game will be Wednesday, July 12 at Slammers Stadium at 7:05 p.m.
