Miners Top Crushers On Sunday For Series Sweep

MARION, Ill.- The Southern Illinois Miners got a quality start from Tyler Stubblefield and a pair of three-run innings offensively on Sunday against the Lake Erie Crushers to help complete a series sweep at Rent One Park by a final score of 8-4 on Father’s Day.

Lake Erie scored an unearned run off Stubblefield (2-1) in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Oliver for a 1-0 early lead, but that lead would evaporate in the bottom of the third. With one out against Juan Caballero (0-1), London Lindley was hit by a pitch and stole both second and third base, setting up Brett Wiley’s sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1. Three pitches later, Ryan Lashley crushed a go-ahead, two-run homer over the left field fence to make it 3-1 Southern Illinois.

Lake Erie responded in the next half inning with two outs, as Oliver and Max Casper hit back-to-back, two-out RBI singles to tie the score at 3-3, but again the Miners would answer. In the bottom of the fourth, Kurt Wertz, Jr. singled to lead off and Nolan Earley followed with a go-ahead, two-run home run into the Miners’ bullpen in right-center field to give the home team the lead back at 5-3. An RBI triple later in the inning with two outs from Craig Massey extended the lead to 6-3, and the Miners would hold the advantage the rest of the way, adding a seventh run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Willi Martin and their final run in the eighth on a two-out single by Wiley.

Stubblefield pitched six innings in the game and allowed just two earned runs on five hits, walking one and striking out a career-best eight to earn the victory on the mound. Offensively, every batter in the Miners’ order had at least one hit in the game, with Lashley leading the charge by going 2-for-5 with a double, home run, two runs scored and two RBIs. Wiley drove home two as well in a 2-for-4 game, his first runs batted in as a Miner, and Martin added two hits of his own while Earley finished with two RBIs as Southern Illinois completed the series sweep to conclude their homestand and tie their longest win streak of the season.

The Miners will next head on the road to begin a nine-game stretch away from Rent One Park on Tuesday night, June 20th at CarShield Field in O’Fallon, Missouri to take on the River City Rascals. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., with Ethan Gibbons taking the ball in the series opener against former Miner Dan Ludwig.
