JOLIET, Ill. – For the second game in a row, the Traverse City Beach Bums(2-4) held on in a high-scoring affair, winning today’s matinee against the Joliet Slammers(2-4), 14-13. Within today’s victory, the Bums take the series against Joliet, two games to one.

The scoring started in the first inning and didn’t stop. After Lucas Hunter got the first hit of his professional career, Steven Patterson walked, then Will Kengor slapped on RBI single to put the Bums on the board. Alexis Rivera hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Patterson making it 2-0. WIth one out on the bottom of the inning, Rock Shoulders hit a two-run homer to tie the game.

In the second, the Beach Bums regained the lead for good. With one away. Kendall Patrick walked then Giancarlo Brugnoni doubled, moving Patrick to third. Tyler Peterson followed with a groundout to drive in a run, the Jeff DeBlieux hit an RBI double, and scored on Lucas Hunter’s RBI single. Elijah Trail got in on the scoring in the third with a two run homer to left, making it a 7-2 game.

After Joliet scored in the bottom of the third, using an Edwin Gomez RBI double, the Beach Bums pulled away with multiple runs in the next two innings. In the fourth, DeBlieux and Hunter led off with singles and Patterson walked to load the bases. Kengor and Rivera followed with sacrifice flies, then Patterson scored on a wild pitch. In the fifth, Peterson reached on an error, Hunter walked, then Patterson hit a three run bomb for a 13-3 lead.

Giancarlo Brugnoni drove in what would be an important run on an RBI single, driving in Rivera, who singled to start the sixth. From there, Joliet started to chip away at their deficit. In the bottom of the frame, Alex Rodriguez hit an RBI double. Then, in the seventh, Joliet put together a four run attack on RBI singles by Shoulders, Gomez, and a two run double by Melvin Rodriguez.

Shoulders got on the board again with a three run blast, for his second of the game the bring Joliet within two. In the bottom of the ninth, Ridge Hoopii-Haslam reached on a fielding error. Alex Rodriguez then slapped a line-drive off of reliever Jacob Lanning’s leg. Brugnoni picked up the ball and shoveled it to Lanning covering first, but Rodriguez was safe. Meanwhile, Hoopii-Haslam tried to make it to third but Lanning’s threw him out. Two batters later, Dane McFarland hit an RBI double, scoring Rodriguez, but Marc Flores ended the game, flying out to left.

Augie Gallarfo picked up his first win of the season, allowing five runs on eight hits, while striking out six, in six innings of work. He Improves to 1-0. Joliet’s Tyler House is saddled with the loss after only surviving 2 1/3 innings and allowing seven runs. Jacob Lanning came on in the eighth, allowed just the one run in the ninth, for his second save of the season.

Tomorrow night, the Beach Bums return home to Wuerfel Park for their home opener as they host the Lake Erie Crushers. Diego Ibarra gets the start for Lake Erie while Kramer Champlin makes his second start of the year for the Beach Bums.
