Southern Illinois Miners’outfielder Shane Kennedy and Traverse City Beach Bums’ starting pitcher Augie Gallardo were named 2016 Frontier League season final Players and Pitcher of the Week, respectively as chosen by Pointstreak, the official statistical provider of the Frontier League and the Independent Professional Baseball Federation.

Kennedy, in his first season of professional baseball managed to get 14 hits in his 25 at bats this week. To start off the week, Kennedy went 2-3 versus the Grizzlies where he managed to get 1 home run, 1 RBI, 1 stolen base, and 1 run scored.  He then followed this impressive performance Thursday against the Grizzlies again getting 4 hits in his 6 at bats. Kennedy, hit 1 double, 1 home run, got 3 RBI, and 4 runs scored this game. In the weekend series verses the Rascals Kennedy hit 7-12 with 1 double, 3 RBI, and 2 runs scored.  He finished the regular season hitting an impressive league leading .363 batting average in 76 games played with 24 doubles, 1 triple, 5 home runs, 47 RBI, and 34 stolen bases. In addition to this week’s Player of the Week honors Kennedy also was awarded the Jason Simontacchi award for the League’s Rookie of the Year and made the outfielder Post-Season All-Star Team. This is the second time this season he has won Player of the Week Award’s, as he won it Week 11 on July 25th, 2016. Before joining the Frontier League Kennedy played collegiately at Clemson University in South Carolina. The 24 year old originally from Orlando, Florida was signed to the Chicago Cubs organization as a free agent 2B in February, 2015. Kennedy also adds to his impressive resume by playing 5 positions this season for the Miners.  The Miners were the 2016 Western Division Champions and will play the River City Rascals at CarShield Field on Tuesday September 5th, 2016 at 6:35 PM Central time zone.

Gallardo earns this week’s Pitcher of the Week honors after his sensational 2-0 start this week.  On Tuesday at Boomers Stadium verse Schaumburg, Gallardo threw 7.0 innings while only giving up 3 hits and no runs. He managed to also get 3 strikeouts and give up only a short 3 walks in this game. Sunday September 4th, at Silver Cross Field verse the Slammers Gallardo threw 7.0 innings and picked up the win. In this game he only allowed 2 hits and racked up a total of 7 strikeouts while only giving up 3 walks.  This improved Gallardo ERA to a very impressive 1.45 while pitching in 4 games and having a 3-0 record for the 2016 season. In those 4 games Gallardo still managed to rack up a total of 21 strikeouts and only gave up 15 hits.  Gallardo from Hemet, California is a 22-year-old right-hander undrafted player out of Eastern Michigan University and signed with the Beach Bums on August 9th.  The Beach Bums finished the 2016 season with a 42-52 record and 4th place in the East Division.
