CRESTWOOD, IL – The Traverse City Beach Bums’(14-25) got some timely home run hitting in today’s matinee, picking up the win over the Windy City Thunderbolts(22-17) by the final score of 12-6.

For the third straight game, Jose Vargas hit a home run. Today, it was a solo shot in the first inning that cleared the right-center field wall for his team-leading sixth of the season. Windy City responded in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Cody Keefer.

In the fifth, Ryan Bottger led off with an infield single. Christian Santisteban then hit a hard base hit to right. Gaby Juarbe, moved the runners to second and third on a nice sacrifice bunt up the third base line. Jeff DeBlieux then hit a soft dribbler towards third and Bottger was thrown out trying to score. Casey Rodrigue followed and blasted a three-run homer over the right-center field walk for his first of the season and the first of his pro career, giving the Beach Bums a 4-1 lead.

The Bums added one more run in the top of the ninth, starting when Giancarlo Brugnoni hit a single to right. Steven Patterson then followed with a grounder to the right side of the infield. The first baseman reached out to tag Brugnoni and missed but was able to get Patterson at first. Two batters later, Santisteban hit an RBI double to right, scoring Brugnoni.

Beach Bums’ starter Kramer Champlin was great through seven innings, allowing just one unearned run, on six hits, while striking out three. Today’s win brings his record to 2-4. Luke Barker and Andrew Brockett closed out the game, each hurling an inning and allowing a hit. Clay Chapman is dealt the loss for Windy City, giving up four runs on eight hits and a walk, in seven innings. He drops to 4-2.

The Beach Bums continue this season-long seven game road trip, with game one of a three game set in Normal, IL, against the Cornbelters. Michael Shreves gets the start for the Beach Bums and Horatio Acosta goes for Normal. First pitch is scheduled for 7:35pm and Tom Willms will have the Miller Lite Pre-Game Show at 7:15pm, on 101.9- The Bay.

Don’t Forget- Coming up on Friday, July 1st, the Tropic Beauty Models will visit Wuerfel Park. Come on out and meet the girls and we will also have another FANtastic Fireworks show following the final pitch of the game against the Southern Illinois Miners. First pitch will be at 7:05pm and the gates open at 5pm.

Sponsorships, season tickets, group packages, patio tables, and suite, are all currently available for the 2016 season. The Box Office & Gift Ship are now open with non-gameday hours of 10am to 6pm Monday through Friday, 10am to 4pm on Saturday. Wuerfel Park is closed on non-gameday Sundays. Stadium hours are extended on gamedays.
